Enhanced Smart Tags

Smart tags were introduced in Office XP. Some smart tags operate based on user activity, such as helping with typing errors. These smart tags are supplied with the products, and are not programmable. For developers, though, there is the ability to create custom smart tags.

In Office XP, custom smart tags could work only in Word and Excel (also in Outlook with Word as the e-mail editor). Office 2003 extends smart tags to work in PowerPoint and Access. Smart tags work by providing a list of possible actions a user can take based on a list of recognized terms. In other words, when a term is typed in, the smart tag will appear and the user can choose from a list of actions. Figure 1.5 shows this feature in Word.
