Overview

InfoPath is a hybrid product built on familiar form design tools and a comprehensive set of XML technologies and standards. As a graphical user interface (GUI) designer, InfoPath has the familiar controls (text box, list, button, and more) as well as the familiar design capabilities, such as drag-and-drop. There are new controls unique to InfoPath, which are explained in this chapter.

The purpose of InfoPath is to create distributable forms, which in turn capture structured input. In this regard, InfoPath fills a vital need of efficient data collection. Unlike other form engines, InfoPath structures data at the point of entry—because entry is guided by the constraints of a schema. Further, there are robust validation mechanisms in InfoPath that give increased control over entry.
