Chapter 3. Formatting Basics > Document Formatting

Document Formatting

Document formatting is applied to an entire document or section of a document. Word offers several options for document formatting, two of which are covered in this chapter:

  • Margins are the spacing between the edge of the paper and the indents (Figure 48). Gutter is the amount of extra space on the inside margin of a document ( Figure 52) , designed to account for space used in binding.

Figure 48. A margin is the space between the edge of the paper and the indent.

Figure 52. The Margins tab of the Document dialog box with Mirror margins turned on and a half-inch gutter.

  • Vertical alignment ( Figure 49) is the vertical position of text on a page. Options include top, center, and justified.
