Formatting Basics

Word offers a wide range of formatting options that you can use to make your documents more interesting and readable. Most formatting can be broken down into three types:

  • Font or character formatting applies to individual characters of text. Examples include bold, italic, underline, and font color. The actual font or typeface used to display characters is also a part of font formatting.

  • Paragraph formatting applies to entire paragraphs of text. Examples are indentation, justification, and line spacing.

  • Document formatting applies to entire documents or sections of documents. Examples include margins and vertical alignment of text on the page.
