Bullets & Numbering

Word automatically includes bullets or numbers at the beginning of paragraphs to which you apply a bulleted or numbered list format (Figure 15).

Tip

You can apply list formats as you type or to paragraphs that have already been typed. Check Chapter 3 for details.


Tip

The bullet and number formats include hanging indents. I explain Word's indentation options in Chapter 3.


Tip

If you use Word's numbering format, Word will automatically increment the number for each consecutive paragraph.


To apply bulleted list formatting

Click the Bullet button on the Formatting Palette.

Choose Format > Bullets and Numbering (Figure 4).

2.
In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box that appears, click the Bulleted tab to display its options (Figure 16).

3.
Click the box that displays the type of bullet character that you want.

4.
Click OK.

Tip

Clicking the Bullet button on the Formatting Palette applies the last style of bullet set in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (Figure 16) or Customize bulleted list dialog box (Figure 17).

Tip

To further customize a bullet list, after step 3 above, click the Customize button in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (Figure 16). Set options in the Customize bulleted list dialog box that appears (Figure 17), and click OK.


Tip

In Word 2001, you can use pictures for bullets. Click the Picture button in the Bulleted tab of the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (Figure 16). Then use the Choose a Picture dialog box that appears (Figure 18) to locate and insert a picture file as a bullet. Word automatically uses the same picture for all bullets in the list.

To apply numbered list formatting

Click the Numbering button on the Formatting Palette.

Choose Format > Bullets and Numbering (Figure 4).

2.
In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box that appears, click the Numbered tab to display its options (Figure 19).

3.
Click the box that displays the numbering format that you want.

4.
Click OK.

Tip

Clicking the Numbering button on the Formatting Palette applies the last style of numbering set in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (Figure 19) or Customize numbered list dialog box (Figure 20).

Tip

To further customize a numbered list, after step 3 above, click the Customize button in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (Figure 19). Set options in the Customize numbered list dialog box that appears (Figure 20), and click OK.


To remove bulleted or numbered list formatting

1.
Choose Format > Bullets and Numbering (Figure 4).

2.
In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box (Figure 16 or 19), click the None box.

3.
Click OK.

or

To remove bulleted list formatting, click the Bullet button on the Formatting Palette (Figure 21).
