Chapter 28. Internet Newsgroups > Posting to Newsgroups

Posting to Newsgroups

You can post messages to newsgroups by either replying to an existing message or posting a new one. It is polite, and in your own self-interest, to read the messages in the newsgroup for perhaps a couple of weeks before posting anything. Also be certain to read the frequently asked questions (FAQ) for the newsgroup, which should be posted to the group at regular intervals. If you don't see a copy of them over a period of a couple of weeks, you should post a message asking where you can find them, and read them before posting so you'll know what constitutes an appropriate posting to the group. Messages that the group's regular participants deem inappropriate are likely to be the target of flame responses (attacks or insults).

To reply to a message:

1.
Select a message in the message list to view it in the preview pane, or double-click it to open it in its own window.

2.
If you want to post a reply to the newsgroup, click the Reply to Newsgroup button in the toolbar at the top of the window (Figure 28.32).

A new message opens (Figure 28.34), containing a copy of the message to which you are replying.
