Chapter 28. Internet Newsgroups > Reading Newsgroups

Reading Newsgroups

Once you have set up your news server account, retrieved the list of newsgroups, and found a group you'd like to read, the next step is to get the current list of messages in the group and read the ones that interest you. Older messages are deleted to make room for incoming new messages, and the retention time of messages can vary even from newsgroup to newsgroup within a single server. Messages are usually updated several times a day.

To manage the current list of messages in a newsgroup:

1.
Select a news server account in the Folder List.

2.
Double-click the name of your chosen newsgroup in the right-hand pane (Figure 28.21).

The first of the current list of messages in that group appear in the upper-right pane (Figure 28.22).

3.
If there are more messages for this newsgroup available on the server, you can retrieve the next batch by clicking the More button in the toolbar at the top of the window (Figure 28.23).

4.
You can sort the messages in the message list by clicking any but the first two column heads (Figure 28.24). Clicking a second time on the same column head reverses the sort order.

5.
A triangle in the first column indicates that there are replies to that particular message. Click the triangle to reveal the replies (Figure 28.25). Click it again to hide the replies.

6.
To reveal or hide all replies in the message list, choose View > Expand All or View > Collapse All (Figure 28.26).
