Numbering Pages

If your document is going to be fairly long, you may want to number the pages. Page numbers help create a polished document and also improve its organization. Aside from that, it'll be a lot easier to get the pages back in order if they happen to scatter on the floor.

To number pages:

1.
Select Insert > Page Numbers.

The Page Numbers dialog box appears (Figure 3.42).

2.
Select the page-number position and alignment.

You can choose whether to have the numbers on the top or bottom of the page (Position) and whether to have them appear on the right, left, or center (Alignment).

The Inside and Outside alignment choices apply if you have mirrored pages. See Chapter 4 for more information on different page layouts.

3.
If you want to have the numbering start on the first page, click the Show number on first page checkbox; otherwise the page numbers begin with page 2.

4.
To change the page-number format, click the Format button in the Page Numbers dialog box.

The Page Number Format dialog box appears (Figure 3.43).

5.
You can choose a numbering style from the Number Format pull-down menu; you can also choose to continue page numbering from a previous section, or designate a new numbering start.
