Setting Margins

Setting margins is another way to implement style in your overall document. Margins create a blank border around the page. Word has its own default margin setting already in place. If your document requires specific margins, then you'll need to change the default. For example, if you'll be punching holes on the left side of your document, you might want to increase the margin on the left to allow extra room.

To change the margins:

1.
Select Document from the Formatting Palette (Figure 3.39).

Figure 3.39. Change your margin settings in the Margins pane under Document in the Formatting Palette.

2.
Under Margins, enter measurements for Left, Right, Top, or Bottom. The margins are applied to your document upon typing them in (Figure 3.40).

Figure 3.40. The paragraph appears with the new margins set.

The Gutter setting applies if you have columns of text and you want extra space between the columns. See Chapter 4 for more information about columns. Mirror margins apply if you're printing a book with text on both sides of a page. See Chapter 4 for more information about layout.

Headers and Footers are covered below.
