Chapter 4. Inserting Charts > Inserting Data Labels

Inserting Data Labels

You can place data labels on data points to show their exact values (Figure 4.21).

Figure 4.21. Data labels appear above each data point.

To insert data labels:

1.
Choose Chart > Chart Options.

2.
Select the Data Labels tab (Figure 4.22).

3.
Choose Show Value.

4.
Click OK.

Figure 4.22. Choose Chart > Chart Options and select the Data Labels tab.

Tip

Data labels are not appropriate for all charts. If the chart has many data points or many data series, the chart may look too busy with data labels or the labels will run into one another.

Tip

To change the number of decimal places displayed in a data label, choose the Format > Selected Data Labels command and select the Number tab.

Tip

To change the size and color of data labels, choose the Format > Font command.

Tip

If a label appears above the plot area, you can either move the label or change the upper value on the y-axis scale.

See Repositioning Data Labels on the next page and Scaling the Axis in Chapter 5.
