Chapter 4. Inserting Charts > Repositioning Data Labels

Repositioning Data Labels

Graph inserts the data labels near the data point but sometimes the labels from one series will overlap the labels from another, or the label may be unreadable in its current position (Figure 4.23). Fortunately, you can position the data labels exactly where you want them (Figure 4.24).

Figure 4.23. With the data labels in the default positions, the values are difficult to read.

Figure 4.24. After the data labels are moved inside the columns, the values become easier to see.

To reposition data labels automatically (2-D charts only):

1.
Select the data labels in a series. (Make sure there are selection handles around each label in the series.)

2.
Choose Format > Selected Data Labels.

3.
Select the Alignment tab (Figure 4.25).

4.
In the Label Position field, choose the desired position (such as Inside End).

5.
Click OK.

Repeat the above steps for each series you want to reposition.

To move data labels manually (for any chart type):

1.
Click the data label you want to move; click until you see selection handles around the one label only (Figure 4.26).

2.
Drag the border of the selected label to the desired position.

Repeat the above steps for each label to be repositioned.
