Chapter 6. Working with Functions > Using Validity Rules

Using Validity Rules

I've reserved the remainder of this chapter to discuss some strategies that will help you create spreadsheets that will work correctly. As I've stated a number of times in this book, no matter how well you design your formulas and functions, you will not get the correct results if the data is not entered correctly into the sheet.

A method that you can use to make sure the appropriate type of data is entered in a range of cells is to use validity rules. For example, if you are using a function such as IF and your test statement is designed to act on cells that contain dates, you need to make sure dates have been entered in those cells.
