Troubleshooting

Calculating Resolution for Print

The numbers are mind-boggling. What do I need to know to get the right resolution for my print job?

You need to know the line screen frequency (in lines per inch, or lpi) that will be used to print the job. Call the printer that will handle the actual production. Multiply the number you get by 1.5 and you have your minimum safe image resolution. You can go as high as two times the lpi and often as low as 1.2 times the lpi. There’s no reason to go above twice the screen frequency, however, because of the way the printer’s dots are calculated. (See Chapter 24, “Commercial Printing and Trapping Issues,” for details.)
