Chapter 25. Linking and Embedding Images... > Embedding Text Files and Fonts

Embedding Text Files and Fonts

Text files can be embedded similarly to vector artwork. The contents of the file become part of the Illustrator document. Text can retain its formatting, including font attributes, when embedded. Unlike raster or vector artwork, however, embedded text files do not appear in the Links palette.

Fonts are not embedded on the artboard like text or artwork. Rather, they are included within the file’s data on disk when you so choose. Including the fonts when an illustration is sent to a service bureau or printer ensures that the document will be output correctly—and will output at all. Missing fonts are a major source of problems at service bureaus and printers. There are, however, legal restrictions on font embedding. In addition, fonts can be subset, which includes only part of the font, and can reduce file size.
