Troubleshooting

Catching Up, But Not Quite There

I have Illustrator 10, with its transparency capabilities, effects, filters, and Save for Web. Should I still buy Photoshop?

Your decision depends on a couple factors. As always, budget is a concern to many people. In terms of capabilities, Illustrator still has a way to go when it comes to pixel pushing. Photoshop works with some color modes and file formats that remain foreign to Illustrator, including 16-bit color and Lab mode. A substantial number of filters and third-party plug-ins can be fully exploited only in Photoshop. And remember that Photoshop has layer effects capabilities that far outstrip the Stylize effects available in Illustrator. If you don’t need the advanced raster-editing capacity, only applying an occasional drop shadow or glow, pass it by. If you want the full power of the pixel in your hands, snap it up.
