Release to Layers

The Release to Layers commands are located in the Layers palette menu, which you access through the triangle in the upper-right corner of the palette. Release to Layers (Sequence) places each object of a selected group or layer onto its own sublayer. Release to Layers (Build) puts the first object on one layer, the first and second on the next layer, the first, second, and third on the third layer, and so on. These commands are invaluable in the creation of Web-based animation. See Chapter 23, “Flash and SVG Support,” for specific information about Web animation.

The objects on a layer or sublayer or in a group are each placed on a new layer according to their stacking order. The objects behind the others are placed on a layer lower than the others. When you’re preparing illustrations for separation to layers, it is a good idea to rearrange the elements in the Layers palette before using the Release to Layers command. The success or failure of an animation depends, in part, on the layers (frames) being displayed in the correct order.
