Object Filters

Illustrator divides both its Filters and Effects menus into sections depending on what type of artwork each filter or effect is intended to work with. The upper section in each menu contains filters or effects that work with Illustrator-created objects—namely, paths. The other filters and effects in the menus can be used with rasterized Illustrator artwork or raster artwork that you've imported into Illustrator from another application, such as scans; these filters and effects are similar to Photoshop's filters.

Although the sets of filters and effects that you can use for raster images are the same, that's not true of object filters and effects. They're two quite different groups of functions. See “Object Effects,” later in the chapter, for more information about object effects. Each of the filters is described individually in Appendix E,“Illustrator, Menu by Menu.”
