Chapter 21. Using Filters and Effects > Filters and Effects and How They Differ

Filters and Effects and How They Differ

Filters and effects apply specialized looks to objects. Some work with vector objects, some only with bitmap objects or objects that have been rasterized. Many of the raster filters and effects cannot be used with CMYK images. All of them can be used with both RGB and grayscale objects.

A filter changes the object or image, permanently applying the special look. Effects, on the other hand, do not alter the object or image itself, only its appearance. The underlying object can still be edited, with the effect automatically updating. Effects can also be changed and reapplied, but filters cannot.
