Reduced Palettes

When you're saving images for use on the Web, Illustrator also gives you the option of restricting the number of colors available. The Web Safe RGB palette ensures that the colors used in your illustration will be properly viewed by the majority of the Web-surfing viewers. Additionally, it can substantially reduce the size of the file. This concept is addressed fully in Chapter 23.

The Web Safe RGB palette is based on the concept that some computers are still restricted to 8-bit color. The term 8-bit refers to the number of actual pieces of computer information used to describe a particular color. (A bit is a single 0 or 1 used in binary computer languages to convey information.) This level of information allows just 256 variations of zeros and ones. Therefore, only 256 different colors can be interpreted by such systems. A few years ago, this was a major concern. Laptop computers in particular had color limitations.
