Chapter 23. Saving Images for the Web > The Optimization Settings

The Optimization Settings

The choices for optimization vary according to the file format selected. The pop-up menu at the top of the Settings area allows you to choose a number of predetermined setting sets. They include PNG-8; PNG-24; JPEG with settings for Low, Medium, or High compression; GIF, with sets of 32, 64, or 128 colors, and each setting either dithered or undithered; and also a choice of GIF with the Web-safe palette. Any change you make to a set of settings changes the pop-up menu to [Unnamed]. Like color tables, sets of settings can be saved and later exchanged between files. The Save Settings command is located in the Settings pop-up menu. Any sets saved appear with the Settings sets in the pop-up menu just below the Cancel button.

Also found in the Settings pop-up menu are the commands Delete Settings, Optimize to File Size, and Repopulate Views. Delete Settings removes the predetermined set of values currently active in the pop-up menu. Optimize to File Size allows you to determine the file format and the target size, leaving Illustrator to make decisions regarding the color table and compression. Repopulate Views, in the 2-Up and 4-Up modes, creates new compression options based on those of the active pane.
