Chapter 19. Raster Images and Rasterized... > Rasterizing Objects in Illustrator

Rasterizing Objects in Illustrator

Illustrator gives you two ways to rasterize an object: through the Object menu or through the Effect menu. When you're rasterizing as an effect, the appearance is changed, but the object or text remains vector artwork. You can reverse the rasterization by selecting the object and deleting the effect from the Appearance palette. (Chapter 21, “Using Filters and Effects,” discusses the nature of effects.)

Knowing when and why to rasterize and understanding the basic settings are key to preserving the appearance of artwork in Illustrator.
