Troubleshooting

Catching Up, But Not Quite There

I have Illustrator 9, with the new transparency capabilities and Save for Web. Should I still buy Photoshop 6?

Your decision depends on a couple of factors. As always, budget is a concern to many people. In terms of capabilities, Illustrator still has a way to go when it comes to pixel pushing. Photoshop 6 works with some color modes and file formats that remain foreign to Illustrator, including 16-bit color and Lab mode. A substantial number of filters and third-party plug-ins can be fully exploited only in Photoshop. And remember that Photoshop 6 has layer effects capabilities that far outstrip the Stylize effects available in Illustrator. If you don't need the advanced raster-editing capacity, only applying an occasional drop shadow or glow, pass it by. If you want the full power of the pixel in your hands, snap it up.
