The Latest Versions: Shared Capabilities

Just after Adobe Illustrator moved into version 9, Adobe Photoshop was released at version 6. These two upgrades were likely the most important in years for their respective products. Both programs received new capabilities, some of which their respective users had been requesting for years.

The biggest addition to Illustrator's bag of tricks is undoubtedly its new capacity for transparency. You now can create actual drop shadows and glows, variable blending modes, and reduced opacity directly in Illustrator. (Chapter 20, “Exploiting Illustrator's Transparency,” examined the new capabilities in depth.) In addition, Illustrator 9 has adopted Photoshop's Save for Web feature, as well as advanced color management.
