Part: X Appendixes > Press Check Checklist

Press Check Checklist

At the press check, it's too late to discover typographical errors or decide to change a layout. This round of proofing is the absolute end. The plates are on the machine; the job is about to roll. Remember to take the contract proof with you for side-by-side comparison. Here's what you should be checking:

  • Misregistration— Look at the registration marks to make sure that each ink is being placed in perfect alignment with the others.

  • Bleedthrough— Too much ink saturates the paper and shows on the other side.

  • Blurring— Two possible causes for blurring are paper shifting as it runs through the press and low ink viscosity. The former produces a smeared look; the latter produces irregular halftone dots, creating an out-of-focus appearance.

  • Crossovers— Make sure the two pages align perfectly.

  • Spotting— Dirt, clumps of ink, and scraps of paper on the plates can also produce spots (called hickeys) on the page.
