Separations and Proofing

Despite the increased number of direct-to-plate printing operations, separations are still a vital step in most press work today. When separations won't output to an imagesetter, you can check several things.

All jobs should be proofed in one or more ways and often multiple times. These reviews are an important quality control step in preparing a job for print. (See Chapter 25, “Commercial Printing and Trapping Issues.”) You may be doing your proofing at a service bureau or print shop, or you may be proofing with a client at the client's office. It's important that you understand what kinds of proofs you're using and what to look for during the review.
