Part: X Appendixes > Working with Illustrator's Menus

Working with Illustrator's Menus

In this appendix, the menus and their commands are presented in their order of appearance in Illustrator. Some of the menu commands open submenus (Filter, Artistic and File, Document Color Mode), some rely on dialog boxes (Edit, Keyboard Shortcuts and Object, Create Gradient Mesh), and some commands are simply executed (File, Revert and Edit, Deselect All). In the menus, the presence of an ellipsis (…) indicates that the command opens a dialog box.

In general, to access a menu command, you mouse to the menu, click, and drag downward to the menu item. If a submenu is activated, you continue dragging across and then down to a specific item. Releasing the mouse button then either executes the command or opens a dialog box. Many commands also have assigned keyboard shortcuts. You can see the default keyboard shortcuts in the menus, with the modifier symbols when required. See Figure E.1 for the Windows translation of the Macintosh symbols.
