Chapter 24. Flash and SVG Support > Creating SVG Output

Creating SVG Output

Because SVG is a young technology, support for it is still developing. The first proposal for the standard was announced in February 1999, and SVG didn't reach candidate release status with the W3C until October of the following year. Although SVG Viewers and plug-ins are available, not all the format's capabilities have been implemented.

Creating for SVG starts with defining shapes and text. Theoretically, you could do so strictly in a text editing program because SVG at its core is XML. Using an illustration program has tremendous advantages, not the least of which is visualization. Dragging a tool to create a square in the upper-left corner of a document is also typically faster than writing the code that defines the starting point and parameters of the object.
