What Is SVG?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an open-standard vector graphics language rather than a file format as such. In addition to animation, SVG promises support for gradients, embedded fonts, transparency, and filters and effects. Interactivity in SVG files can be developed through the use of JavaScript. An SVG file is actually a text file, and SVG animated and interactive files can theoretically be written in a text editor.

SVG continues to be developed under the auspices of the W3C, the body charged with promoting the evolution of and maintaining the universality of the Web. Using the XML (Extensible Markup Language) of the Web, it allows vector (rather than raster) graphics, improved text support, and interactivity. Illustrator produces SVG files with graphics and the XML required to display them on the Web. Web browsers normally must use a plug-in to display SVG graphics.
