Creating Web Graphics

Illustrator's capabilities make it an excellent tool for laying out Web sites and designing Web pages and their components. The Layers palette allows you to easily organize and utilize all the individual elements of an entire site in one document. Yet, perhaps the greatest contribution it can make to a Web designer is in the actual creation of the page content, the production aspect of Illustrator. Illustrator's support for Web graphics remains on the leading edge, allowing your pages and sites to take advantage of the newest standards. At the same time, Illustrator allows you to easily ensure that your site can be viewed by individuals who do not have access to high-powered hardware and the latest browsers.

You need to keep in mind several important concepts when designing and producing Web graphics. You should understand file formats, color, rasterization, and file size thoroughly. Proper preparation of individual images can mean the difference between success and failure for a Web page. Improperly prepared graphics can impose incredibly long download times on a site's visitors, or may not be viewable at all.
