Chapter 16. Customizing Illustrator > Setting Illustrator's Preferences

Setting Illustrator's Preferences

Illustrator 9 has eight dialog box panels devoted to application preferences. You can access all of them by choosing Edit, Preferences. Additionally, pressing Cmd+K (Ctrl+K) opens the first dialog box (General Preferences), and you can assign keyboard shortcuts to each panel individually.

Tip

When Illustrator doesn't want to work correctly, one of your first troubleshooting steps should be deleting the Preferences file. When Illustrator cannot find the appropriate file, a new set of preferences is generated, with the factory-default settings. See the sidebar “Re-creating Illustrator's Preferences” later in this chapter.
