Pathfinder

Illustrator's Pathfinder functions are available in two incarnations: the Pathfinder palette and the Pathfinder group of object effects. You can accomplish the same results with both methods, but like all effects, Pathfinder effects can be removed later without removing any other changes (such as fills, strokes, and transformations) that you might make to the objects after using Pathfinder commands on them.

All Pathfinder commands operate on one or more shapes, combining and trimming them in various ways to create new shapes. Some of the commands work with one shape—in other words, you don't see an error message—but they don't have any effect.
