Fill Patterns

Fill patterns can be complex or simple, plain or ornate. All, however, have several things in common. As discussed earlier, a number of tools and techniques cannot be used to create patterns. In addition, all fill patterns tile from the ruler origin. All fill patterns are stored in the Swatches palette and are kept with a particular document. More complex patterns should be smaller for efficiency. Simple patterns can be larger. Most fill pattern swatches should be between 1/2- and 1-inch square.

The process of creating a fill pattern is rather simple. You draw the artwork, place a bounding box behind the artwork to designate what will be included in the pattern, and save the pattern to the Swatches palette by choosing Edit, Define Pattern. Creating a good fill pattern, however, requires some planning.
