Notable Add-Ons and Plug-Ins

Illustrator CS2 has amazing features for any creative workflow, but it doesn't always have every feature needed. When you need something else, turn to these resources.

  • The single largest and most focused resource available for plug-ins, scripts, swatches, symbols, brushes, tutorials, and all kinds of (mostly free) goodies for Illustrator (and other Adobe applications) is the Adobe Studio. Though many of the resources there are created by Adobe, most come from Illustrator users and enthusiasts.

  • Boasting one of the best collections of plug-ins for Illustrator (as well as Photoshop, InDesign, and others) is PluginsWorld.

  • John Wundes maintains several neat Illustrator scripts on his website.

  • Drawing in Illustrator with a mouse just cannot compare to the freedom of drawing with a pressure-sensitive stylus and tablet. Here are the top stylus and tablet manufacturers.

  • Font management is critical not only to a reliable workflow but also to keeping Illustrator happy. If you don't use a font management program, you really do need to begin. Included with Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and higher is Apple's FontBook. If you are on Windows or just looking for more control, Suitcase and Font Reserve, both from Extensis, are the professionals' choices.
