Where to Turn for How-To and Technical Support

When Illustrator isn't working as expected—or at all—who ya gonna call? No, not Ghostbusters.

  • Included in this appendix's downloadable resource files is Known Issues.pdf, which details some of the technical issues (bugs) we encountered while writing and editing the projects in this book, and that you are likely to encounter as well. Also included are any known workarounds for the technical issues. I've included it in a downloadable PDF because that type of information is fluid, and I can keep a PDF updated much more easily than an ink and pulp list. I'll update the Known Issues.pdf file as new information (such as patches from Adobe) becomes available. So please check the download from time to time.

  • Illustrator Help should always be your first stop. If you enjoy spending hours hunting down the smallest scrap of useful information in vague, barely comprehensible software help files, you won't like Illustrator's help. It's concise but detailed, well-written, and organized. It even contains a number of tutorials!

  • Adobe Technical Support knows their stuff (they should—I trained them).

  • Adobe Expert Support is contract-based how-to support. Technical Support will help you resolve technical issues—when something is broken—but when you need help locating, configuring, or using something, that's the domain of Expert Support (whom I also largely trained).

  • The Adobe Illustrator Discussion List is a public forum and mailing list on Yahoo! Groups. Moderated by Sterling Ledet & Associates, one of the top Adobe Certified Training Providers, the Adobe Illustrator Discussion List is a first-class place to discuss and ask for help in all things Illustrator- and illustration-related. Many of the most active members are published authors (like yours truly) and professional Illustrator instructors (yeah, like me again). Anyone may join, with or without a Yahoo! account.


  • At more than four years old, the 1,000-member-strong Graphic Design Resource Group is another public Yahoo! Group similar to the Adobe Illustrator Discussion List, though with a broader focus on everything design-related (including software like Illustrator). Topics range from how to do something in creative tools like Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Corel, and so on to setting freelance rates and building contracts, copyright law to fonts, and everything else of concern to designers and illustrators. Anyone may join, with or without a Yahoo! account. Both the author and technical editor of this book are highly active members of this group.


  • Adobe's User-to-User Forums are the best company-hosted forums in the software business. In addition to interacting with Illustrator users of all levels, you will find knowledgeable experts and even Adobe product managers and engineers, all gladly helping to answer support, how-to, and other questions. There are separate forums for the Mac and Windows versions of Illustrator.


  • On Usenet the Illustrator newsgroup is active and informative.
