Chapter 1. Getting to Know Illustrator W... > Illustrator's User Interface

Illustrator's User Interface

Let's just go over a few notable points about the Illustrator CS2 user interface.

The Adobe Common User Interface

Adobe, the originator of Illustrator, recognized many years ago that nearly 90% of the creative pros using one Adobe product also use a second. Almost 80% of those also use a third. When Adobe talked to those users, asking about their experience using these tools, Adobe learned an important lesson. The number one pain point cited by users of multiple Adobe products was that the applications looked and worked differently; switching between any two or more of Illustrator, Photoshop, PageMaker, and other Adobe applications required a period of adjustment—not just during initial learning, but whenever the user left one application momentarily to work in another. Similar commands were on different menus, keyboard shortcuts were inconsistent, and even identical tools—the Pen tool, for example, which appears in all of the above applications—functioned differently.
