Final Thoughts

When designing any type of packaging, always print a proof and build a physical mockup to check for construction errors—particularly with folding packages like our exploded box. For presentation to your client, consider virtual mockups like a 3D box built from your exploded design or a 3D labeled can such as the one I used in my box design. Of course, if you have a good proof printer and the means, nothing will knock a client's socks off like putting a physical mockup of her conceptual product in her hands.

Where panels of a box overlap, they needn't contain artwork because they will be glued. Prior to that use, they are ideal for holding vital printing information like color scales and registration and other marks. Though your print provider will often prefer to define the glue areas and marks himself, he may ask you to do it—ask.
