Final Thoughts

If there's a secret to the success of good advertising, layout, or graphic design in general, it would have to be grids. Though the uninitiated often view grids as restrictive to creativity, preferring to shoot from the hip, they are exactly the opposite. Adhering strictly to too simple a grid is limiting, yes, but rather than abandon grids, expand them. Add more columns and rows—even if elements span multiple columns and/or rows. You can also vary the size of columns and rows; there's no rule that says grids must be symmetrical. Grids bring order, structure, and direction, three crucial elements in any form of visual communication.

Look at ads and other designs that appeal to you. Then grab a ruler and pencil and discover their grids and hierarchies.
