About the Author

A 20-year graphic communications industry veteran and former Technical Lead to Adobe's Technical Support team, Pariah S. Burke is in high demand as a desktop publishing and graphic design workflow consultant and instructor. He travels all around North America training and consulting for advertising and design agencies, print and prepress production houses, and government and military agencies in Illustrator, InDesign, QuarkXPress, Photoshop, InCopy, PageMaker, Acrobat, Adobe Creative Suite, Variable Data Publishing, and more.

As a creative professional, Pariah has enjoyed success in nearly every field of print and web design, prepress, magazine publishing, and advertising. As the former co-owner of a prepress service bureau and principal for seven years of his own design and advertising agency, Pariah understands not only the designer's role in the market, but the concerns and processes of press and prepress production and creative direction.

He is the editor-in-chief of Quark VS InDesign.com, the founder of Designorati.com, and creator of the Design Weblog, the Magazine Weblog, and the (Unofficial) Photoshop Weblog for Weblogs, Inc. Additionally, Pariah is a contributing author to the book Special Edition: Using Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Que, 2005), and his articles and tutorials have appeared in numerous other publications and periodicals.

Among Pariah's print and web design credits are work for Time-Warner, Black Crow Broadcasting, UPSCALE Magazine, whose look he helped redefine and whose print magazine he brought online in 1998. He helped the venerable monthly magazine integrate an Internet-based revenue stream into its publishing kingdom. He is most proud of his work for Playboy Enterprises, for whom he created and designed the Playboy Sun skin- and sun-care product line national launch campaign; including designing the line's brand identity as well as all product packaging, promotional materials, and photography.

In 2001, Pariah sold his design business, Imaginations Unlimited, and moved from Daytona Beach, Florida to Portland, Oregon to support and train Adobe Systems, Inc.'s North American Technical Support team. As Technical Lead for Illustrator, InDesign, InCopy, PageMaker, and Acrobat to that division, and as primary how-to guru and MVP for Photoshop, ImageReady, typography, color management, prepress, the Web, and QuarkXPress, Pariah taught Adobe's Technical Support team to use Adobe products and related technologies in real-world creative and production workflows.

After three wonderful years with Adobe, he returned full-time to explore exciting new projects in his life-long passions of graphic design and illustration, writing about the design industries and tools, and teaching on-the-job creatives.

Pariah lives in the crisp air and majestic beauty of the suburbs of Portland, Oregon with his beautiful fiancée, two lovely stepdaughters, a cowardly dog, five uppity cats, and two rowdy hamsters.
