Lesson 1. FreeHand Basics > Using the Line Tool

Using the Line Tool

The top right knob on the finished camera contains vertical lines to simulate the textured pattern on the knob. To draw this pattern, you will use the Line tool. You could draw each line individually, but then you would have the problem of spacing the lines equally. Instead, you will draw one line, make a duplicate of that line, and then use blending to draw the other lines in the pattern automatically.

1.
Select the Line tool from the Tools panel.

You will draw a vertical line within the rectangle for the knob. To make that task easier, you might want to zoom in on the knob.

2.
Hold down Shift and drag down to draw a vertical line within the knob rectangle close to the left edge of the rectangle.

Holding Shift as you draw with the Line tool constrains the line to a vertical line. If the line is not positioned properly or is too long or short, use the Pointer tool to drag either the top or bottom point to make the line fit within the rectangle. If you need to move the line closer or farther away from the left edge of the rectangle, use the Pointer tool to move the line left or right.
