Lesson 1. FreeHand Basics > Changing the View Magnification

Changing the View Magnification

As you work with drawings, you will often find it helpful to zoom in or out of the page either to isolate an object or to see the entire image. For example, you might want to zoom in to make sure that the rectangles you added to the top of the camera coincide with the top of the camera body. There are several ways to accomplish this, using either menu commands or keyboard shortcuts.

Click the Magnification pop-up menu and select a larger number from the pop-up menu.

The Magnification pop-up menu is located on the Status toolbar in Windows and at the bottom of the document window in Mac OS. The page view changes to the magnification selected.

You can also use the View menu to change the magnification. Notice that the View menu has fewer options than the Magnification pop-up menu.

Power Tip

You can also type any magnification value (from 6 to 256,000 percent) in the magnification text box. Press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac OS) to set the magnification value for the page.

Select the Zoom tool on the Tools panel and then click in the middle of the camera.

The cursor changes to a magnifying glass with a plus sign in the middle. The page magnification is centered on the point you clicked on the page. If you want to see a specific area, then click that area of the page. As you continue to click with the Zoom tool, the page magnification jumps to the next level. When you reach the greatest magnification level, the plus sign is removed from the pointer, indicating that you can’t zoom in any closer. With a maximum zoom value of 256,000 percent, you shouldn’t see that empty pointer often.

Power Tip

If you drag around an area with the Zoom tool, FreeHand displays a dotted-line marquee. When you release the mouse button, the page is zoomed in on just that area. This procedure is sometimes more efficient than clicking several times with the Zoom tool.

Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) to change the Zoom In tool to the Zoom Out tool. Click the page to decrease the magnification level.

The tool switches to a magnifying glass with a minus sign in the middle.
