Lesson 9. Creating Animations and Movies > Assigning Keyboard Shortcuts

Assigning Keyboard Shortcuts

Do you use keyboard shortcuts? Most people know the shortcuts common across applications. For example, many people use Ctrl+O (Windows) or Command+O (Mac OS) to open files, Ctrl+S or Command+S to save files, and Ctrl+P or Command+P to print files. One way to increase your productivity is to learn and use keyboard shortcuts. However, if you use applications from several vendors in creating your documents, you may be frustrated when applications use different commands for similar tasks. A good example of a tool used in other applications is the Hand tool, sometimes called the grabber hand. The Hand tool allows you to scroll through your document without using the scrollbars. In FreeHand, the spacebar is the shortcut for accessing the Hand tool when you are drawing on the page. If you are entering or editing text, the spacebar shortcut is disabled. Try using this shortcut as you complete the remaining projects in this book.

A useful feature in all Macromedia MX applications is the ability to redefine the keyboard shortcuts. You can change an existing shortcut, or if a shortcut is not assigned to a command, you can assign one. If you use several applications in your workflow, you may want to assign the same shortcut key to similar commands in all of the applications. For example, grouping and ungrouping is a common task in many graphics and page layout applications. If you are accustomed to using Ctrl+U (Windows) or Command+U (Mac OS) to ungroup objects, for example, you may want to change FreeHand to use that same shortcut key. FreeHand contains several shortcut command sets from other applications. You can use an existing set as a starting point and then modify it to suit your preferences. The standard Macromedia set contains shortcuts that are common across Macromedia products such as Flash and Fireworks.
