Lesson 6. Adding Special Effects > Adding Live Effects

Adding Live Effects

Live effects are properties you can apply to your objects to change their shapes or to add special effects. One advantage of live effects is that the object is not modified. Because the effects are live, if you decide later to remove an effect, you just delete the property from the Object panel, and the object returns to its original state.

You can add vector and raster live effects to your objects. Live vector effects produce vector graphics. Therefore, vector effects are independent of display or printer resolution and scale smoothly to any size. Raster effects, like vector effects, act as properties of the object they are applied to and do not modify the object itself. Live raster effects applied to vector graphics produce raster, or bitmap, graphics. For example, if you apply a drop shadow effect to a rectangle, the rectangle is converted to a bitmap graphic. Therefore, raster effects look best when rendered at the correct resolution for the final output device, whether a computer monitor or a hard-copy printer.
