Free Transform for All

What if there were a way to combine the transformation tool team of scale, rotate, reflect, and shear with a totally wacky distortion filter in one simple, elegant tool? Well, bunky, your search is over. Welcome to the free transform tool. Although it displays handles that look very similar to its weakling cousin, the bounding box, the beefy free transform tool goes far beyond the bounding box.

When you select a path (or paths) and then choose the free transform tool from the toolbox, Illustrator displays the standard eight-handled bounding box that just surrounds the paths. As with the bounding box, the orientation of the bounding box depends on the original paths. If you don't like the orientation that Illustrator assigns to the box, either choose Object » Transform » Reset Bounding Box or right-click (Control-click on the Mac) and choose Transform » Reset Bounding Box. Illustrator will slap the bounding box into shape, aligning it such that it squares with the artboard and its pages.
