Fitting Text on the Fly

Only two more commands left in the Type menu—Fit Headline and Create Outlines. The first shrinks or stretches a line of type to fit the width of a column, and the second converts character outlines to paths, as I discuss in the next section.

The Fit Headline command modifies a line of text to make it fill the entire width of a text block. The top two examples in Figure 11.35 show what happens when you apply the Fit Headline command to a line of type. In the first example, the single word Monkey is too narrow to fit the width of the column. When I chose Type » Fit Headline, Illustrator added sufficient kerning to the letters to stretch them across the text block. In the second example, the two-word paragraph is too wide to fit. Fit Headline reduced the kerning of these characters to make them fit.
