Importing and Exporting Text

Despite Illustrator's crack text capabilities, you should find it easier to use a word processing program to edit text and apply formatting attributes. You can also export text from Illustrator into these same word processing file formats. Doing so allows you to recover and work with text that has been laid out in an Illustrator document, and even lets you transfer it to a mightier layout program such as QuarkXPress.

Preparing Your Text for Import

When importing a text file, Illustrator reads the file from disk and copies it to the illustration window. As this copy is being made, the text file passes through a filter that converts the file's formatting commands into formatting commands recognized by Illustrator. Illustrator lets you import text in the following formats:
