Chapter 11. Some of Your Wackier Text Ef... > Converting Character Outlines to Pat...

Converting Character Outlines to Paths

The outlining capability in Illustrator is both its most essential and straightforward feature. By choosing Type » Create Outlines or Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd-Shift-O on the Mac)—that's the letter O, not a zero—you can convert any selected text block into a collection of editable paths, composed of points and sections (see Figure 11.37). The only catch is that the type must be selected with the arrow tool—you can't highlight it with the type tool. You may also right-click (or Control-click on the Mac) and choose Create Outlines, but this works only if the type was selected with the arrow tool. This will seem but a small inconvenience when you see how quickly and powerfully the command performs.

Figure 11.37. Select a text block (top) and choose Type » Create Outlines to produce a collection of fully editable points and segments (bottom).
