Close, But Not Kin: Illustrator Versus Photoshop

Now in its fifteenth year, Illustrator is often seen as a kind of support program for Photoshop, thanks to the latter's dramatic and overshadowing success. Mind you, Illustrator's growth has been consistent and commendable over the years, and to this day it remains the world's most popular PostScript drawing program. But Photoshop manages to sell roughly twice as well as Illustrator, despite being nearly three years younger.

Truth be told, Adobe has tried to piggyback Illustrator on Photoshop's success. Since Photoshop was first released, Illustrator's popularity has mushroomed and the two programs have become more closely related. In fact, beginning with Illustrator 7, Adobe took this marriage one step further. Illustrator now has the look and feel of Photoshop. It still functions as Illustrator should, but the physical layout and the interface is similar to that of modern-day Photoshop. Adobe is simply trying to make Illustrator more accessible to the numerous Photoshop users.
