Chapter 10. How to Handle Typical Type > Selecting and Editing Text

Selecting and Editing Text

Before you can change a single character of type or change how text looks on the page, you have to select the type using the arrow or the type tool.

  • Click along the baseline of a line of type with any selection tool to select all type in the object. If you change the font, type size, style, or some other formatting attribute, you change all characters in the selected text object.

  • Shift-click to select multiple text objects. Any changes you make to the text formatting will apply to all of the selected text objects. (Illustrator doesn't format an entire text block if you select just a portion of the text object's outline with the direct selection tool.)

  • If you select text with a type tool, you can edit that text by entering new text from the keyboard, or you can format the selected text independently of other text within the object.
