Adjusting a Gradient Fill to Fit its Path

When you first assign a linear gradation to a path, Illustrator orients the gradation horizontally so it fades from left to right. When you assign a radial gradation, the gradation starts in the center of the shape. Because neither of these two settings is very interesting, Illustrator lets you easily change the angle of a linear gradation and reposition colors inside any gradation.

Changing the Angle by the Numbers

One way to change the angle of a linear gradation is to enter a value into the Angle option box in the Gradient palette. This is useful if you want to match the angle of an object ascertained with the measure tool.
