Chapter 15. Fills, Multi-Fills, and Fab Fills > Filling Closed and Open Paths

Filling Closed and Open Paths

Before I explain how you define and apply cool fills such as gradations, meshes, and patterns, there are a few basic principles I'd like to clarify. First of all, you can fill any kind of path, whether open or closed. When you fill a closed path, the entire interior of the path is affected. Figure 15.1 shows a closed path as it appears selected in the outline mode and the same path filled in the preview mode. The shape acts like a malleable water balloon—the fill seeps into every nook and cranny of the outline.

Figure 15.1. In the outline mode, the fill of a closed path is invisible (top). But in the preview mode, the fill permeates the shape (bottom).
